South Devon and Channel Shellfishermen and GAP2

“All crab fishermen will take part in the GAP project, with 8 vessels from Dartmouth and Salcombe taking a scientist to sea once a month”

The annual general meeting of the South Devon and Channel Shellfishermen Ltd’s (SDCSFA) was attended to refresh the membership on the aims and objectives of the GAP 2 program. Since then, monthly meetings have been attended to feedback information and answer any questions.

All fishermen within the SDCSFA had consented to take part in the GAP project, and 8 of them have offered to take a scientist to sea once a month from two ports, Dartmouth and Salcombe.

The study area, the “Inshore Potting Agreement Area” in South Devon, has been zoned to provide spatially and temporally representative data on the geographic position of each string of pots, soak time, mean depth, bottom type and on the characteristics of the catch (number, sex and discards).

Professor Paul Hart and PhD researcher Emma Pearson from University of Leicester have attended meetings with the Executive Committee of the South Devon & Channel Shellfishermen Ltd’s, including chairman Mr. Brian Pawley. The meetings on 8th September and 6th October 2011 were held to report on progress on sampling and exchange of information regarding catch data.
